NetBeans OpenGL Pack

Printer friendlyPrinter friendly

There is the Java Open GL or JOGL, a version of OpenGL for Java. Furthermore, there is a 'Netbeans OpenGL Pack' which is fantastic news to me since I made the switch to Netbeans. Straight from the Netbeans OpenGL pack logoproject website comes this description:

The goal of the NetBeans OpenGL Pack Project is to provide an easy to use OpenGL development environment integrated into NetBeans. The NetBeans OpenGL Pack provides modules like an GLSL shader editor, hardware compiler/linker integration or tools for displaying hardware information and many sample projects.

Throw in porting of the 'Red Book' and NeHe tutorial series and it looks like a clear winner to me. Also, the lwjgl or 'light weight java gaming library' is promising. It also looks like the OpenGL Pack has a lot of support, which is important -> unpopular great projects die slow, slow frustrating deaths.

The downsides for me are I have to refresh myself with java, it is probably a little slower performance wise (could be wrong) than a C/C++ implementation.

I am looking forward to start programming OpenGL again and should have a new landing page and first artivle of my new tutorial series early next week.
